SECRETS IN OUR CITIES: A PARANORMAL URBAN FANTASY ANTHOLOGY

The real world and imagination collide in this international collection of paranormal urban fantasies.

Some cities are inhabited by lycanthropes: a werewolf-turned-private-eye takes on a kidnapping case that upsets his plans for a simple life; a vegetarian werewolf must join forces with a local pack to save their city; and a twenty-something lycan thinks she’s the scariest monster in town until she meets a necromancer.

Children are often the center of paranormal activity: a troop of Mountain Gals on a camping trip runs afoul of a witch; a high school outcast pairs up with an angel to guide ghosts to their final rests; a young fae intelligence agent is placed on his first undercover assignment at a high school; and a little girl rattles a zombie-run pub for supernatural clientele when she accidentally begins haunting it.

These young urbanites are more than they seem: a kindhearted girl changes her life forever when she offers shelter to an injured hellhound; a runty dragon dwells in the sewers plotting revenge while dreaming of reliable takeout; and an ordinary detective must team up with a young hotshot magician to solve a mysterious disappearance.

Step across the paranormal divide with these ten short stories, and you’ll never look at your hometown the same way again.

Hide It In Your Heart 2019

Lima, Annie HIDE IT IN YOUR HEART

This 2019 calendar features a Bible verse for each week in creative fonts that can be colored in. A wide variety of holidays are listed, both traditional and unusual. (Do you know when Appreciate a Dragon Day is? How about Lost Sock Memorial Day?) You’ll have plenty of room to record your activities and appointments in the section for each day and week. After every month, you’ll find word puzzles featuring key words from that month’s scriptures and holidays.

Prepare for a year full of coloring and fun that will help you hide God’s Word in your heart in 2019 without even trying!

The Author provided me with a preview copy in exchange for my honest review.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS:

While I am not a coloring page person, I am a planner junkie, so I offered to give it a look over.

As far as the planner portion goes, this is a week-at-a-glance only with no monthly pages. At 8.5 x 11 inches, there is plenty of room to write your appointments or make a quick note about something that happened that day.

Psalm 103.2-4

On the opposite page is a full coloring page featuring a Bible verse, and in between months, there are Word Scramble and Word Search puzzles. Solutions to the puzzles ca be found at the back of the book.

MY REVIEW:

Personally, I use a planner/journal that is a bit more robust as a full planner, with task lists, daily schedules and the like. However, this one could be a fun way to keep track of special memories and give my mind a break with a bit of adult style coloring.

If you are looking for coloring book that is scripture based and does double duty as a simple weekly planner, give this one a try for 2019!

Enjoy!

Yet, Abigaia’s eccentric father always taught her to be proud of her heritage. Her ancestry lies across the sea, in a prominent realm she’s read about but has never seen.

The man who desires Abigaia’s hand in marriage doesn’t share her hope of seeing the Eubeltic Realm. But disaster erupts in their path, and Abigaia’s dream may have a greater purpose—if that famed domain of her ancestors is now in crucial need of her.

This book is inspirational historical fantasy: fictional history that takes place in a completely fictional world. While this novel can stand alone, its background comes further to light in The Movement of Crowns Series, which is great to read before or after this book.

A midwife has a chance to right a seventy-year-old wrong. Tessa delivers babies at night and raises five sons by day. When an angel appears after a birth and asks for help on a quest, her first response is, “Angels don’t even exist,” followed by a swift, “No.”

Even after he proves he exists (and lets her call him Martin) she wants nothing to do with his quest: Martin wants to find a relic stolen at the end of World War II, when the town of Barlassina was torched and its church destroyed. The relic went into the pocket of a long-dead soldier and hasn’t been seen since.

Without the relic, the church won’t be rebuilt; without the church, Barlassina will die. It’s been gone for eight decades, but Martin senses the relic is about to be “birthed back into time.” He wants Tessa there when it happens. There’s only one chance to make it right, and he’s desperate.

Tessa’s family comes from that town, but really? Still no.

When a bill threatens to end midwifery in Massachusetts, Tessa offers Martin a deal: she’ll hunt for the relic if he’ll help kill that legislation. An unlikely team, they start sifting through the past and the present, the lives of soldiers and the deaths of innocents, guilty consciences and a few consciences that aren’t nearly guilty enough.

The further they delve into the mystery, though, the more obvious it becomes that there’s more to Martin’s story. And the key to uncovering the relic may lie in whatever it is he’s trying to keep hidden.

Jane Lebak writes novels about angels, smart women, and smart women dealing with angels. Relic of His Heart has all three in spades, in a rousing triumph of love, persistence, and the many ways the present encounters the past.

True love is shrouded in secrets and lies in the enchanting second book in the #1 New York Times bestselling Infernal Devices Trilogy, prequel to the internationally bestselling Mortal Instruments series.

In the magical underworld of Victorian London, Tessa Gray has found safety with the Shadowhunters. But that safety proves fleeting when it becomes clear that the mysterious Magister will stop at nothing to use Tessa’s powers for his own dark ends.

With the help of the handsome, tortured Will and the devoted Jem, Tessa discovers that the Magister’s war on the Shadowhunters is deeply personal and fueled by revenge. To unravel the secrets of the past, the trio journeys from mist-shrouded Yorkshire to a manor house that holds untold horrors. When they encounter a clockwork demon bearing a warning for Will, they realize that the Magister knows their every move—and that one of their own has betrayed them.

Tessa is drawn more and more to Jem, though her longing for Will continues to unsettle her. But something is changing in Will. Could finding the Magister free Will from his secrets and give Tessa answers about who she really is? As their search leads to deadly peril, Tessa learns that secrets and lies can corrupt even the purest heart.

First impression.

First of all, the original cover for Clockwork Prince features the character who moves my heart and emotions every time his name is mentioned – James Carstairs aka Jem – so, the cover alone is enough to make me want to read. But, the book opens with Will seeking the help of Old Molly, a long dead woman who haunts an unconsecrated burial yard. He’s just begun his quest to break the curse he believes will kill anyone who is foolish enough to fall in love with him.

It is that journey that drives this book forward, and it is the moments in between that steal your breath.

What kept me reading (or didn’t).

Jem and Tessa have slowly but surely fallen in love while the rest of their world seems to be falling apart. There are too many events and revelations about Mortmain and his motivations to list, and we learn a little more about what Tessa actually is.

But while this series tells a story of a world the appears to be hurtling toward an end to Shadowhunters, and the background of mechanical automatons, demons, and the betrayal of family after family is written with enough detail you can hear the rattle and click of the gears, smell the rotting breath, and taste the bitter air surrounding 1870’s London, the real attraction of these books remains the intricate relationships and fragile emotions that brew between the characters.

Will, Jem, Tessa, Charlotte, Henry, Sophie, Gabriel, and Gideon are all familiar friends by now, and their reactions FEEL real and powerful. When they are joyful, angry, hurting, or broken hearted (The most frequent of emotions.) you are dragged into the moment with them.

Sometimes it’s a struggle for me to remember that these are NOT real people I’m reading about. The fantasy world should make it easier, but the things the characters wrestle with – honor, betrayal, love, hatred – are all very natural, real world reactions to what is happening around them. Reading these books is like reading old letters written by close friends.

After taste.

This book, the second of the series, is extremely bittersweet. Jem and Tessa’s moments of happiness are shattered and tinted with Will’s struggle, and Will’s struggle is made easier knowing his Pārbati is happy.

Overall impression.

I adore this series. There’s not much else I can say about it.

Quotes or Highlights

“Ah,” said a voice from the doorway, “having your annual ‘everyone thinks Will is a lunatic’ meeting, are you?
“It’s biannual,” said Jem. “And no, this is not that meeting.”

_________________

“They’re not hideous,” said Tessa.
Will blinked at her. “What?”
“Gideon and Gabriel,” said Tessa. “They’re really quite good-looking, not hideous at all.”
“I spoke,” said Will, in sepulchral tones, “of the pitch-black inner depths of their souls.”
Tessa snorted. “And what color do you suppose the inner depths of your soul are, Will Herondale?”
“Mauve,” said Will.”

________________

“Demon pox, oh demon pox
Just how is it acquired?
One must go down to the bad part of town
Until one is very tired.
Demon pox, oh demon pox, I had it all along—
Not the pox, you foolish blocks,
I mean this very song—
For I was right, and you were wrong!”
“Will!” Charlotte shouted over the noise, “Have you LOST YOUR MIND? CEASE THAT INFERNAL RACKET! Jem—”
Jem, rising to his feet, clapped his hands over Will’s mouth. “Do you promise to be quiet?” he hissed into his friend’s ear.
Will nodded, blue eyes blazing. Tessa was staring at him in amazement; they all were. She had seen Will many things—amused, bitter, condescending, angry, pitying—but never giddy before.
Jem let him go. “All right, then.”
Will slid to the floor, his back against the armchair, and threw up his arms. “A demon pox on all your houses!” he announced, and yawned.
“Oh, God, weeks of pox jokes,” said Jem. “We’re in for it now.”

Magic is dangerous—but love is more dangerous still. Discover the riveting first book in the #1 New York Times bestselling Infernal Devices Trilogy, prequel to the internationally bestselling Mortal Instruments series.

In a time when Shadowhunters are barely winning the fight against the forces of darkness, one battle will change the course of history forever. Welcome to the Infernal Devices trilogy, a stunning and dangerous prequel to the New York Times bestselling Mortal Instruments series.

The year is 1878. Tessa Gray descends into London’s dark supernatural underworld in search of her missing brother. She soon discovers that her only allies are the demon-slaying Shadowhunters—including Will and Jem, the mysterious boys she is attracted to. Soon they find themselves up against the Pandemonium Club, a secret organization of vampires, demons, warlocks, and humans. Equipped with a magical army of unstoppable clockwork creatures, the Club is out to rule the British Empire, and only Tessa and her allies can stop them….

First impression.

Before I even get into the review – I truly can’t believe I have never written a review of this book EVER. I’ve read it at least 7 times, and each time it is like falling for your first love all over again…

The book opens with Will and Jem out on patrol in the middle of the night in 1878 London. The two boys immediately captured my heart, and they have never left. While I certainly love Tessa, and though the story wouldn’t exist without her, it is always the relationship and bond between the boys that draws me back into the story.

What kept me reading (or didn’t).

Jem’s wisdom and almost shy kindness, and his patient, mostly amused way of dealing with Will. Will’s boldness and icy defection of anyone besides Jem who might dare to get close to him. Tessa’s sweet but courageous personality and fresh innocence as she is introduced to the world of Shadowhunters and Downworlders.

Though I have already admitted I have read this series multiple times, I am always amazed by the way Ms. Clare defines so many complex relationships between the characters. You can truly FEEL how much they care for each other, and when the story breaks their hearts, it will break yours also.

The other character I adore, is Magnus Bane. He is the voice of wisdom and calm throughout the Shadowhunter world. He is flippant, at times irreverent, and often pluckish, but his tender heart and willingness to help a hurting 17 year old boy makes him fun and refreshing as a counterpoint to the tension threading through the rest of the book.

After taste.

I felt everything these characters felt, including the evil ones. That is a testament to great writing, when as a reader, I can identify with – and to a point, sympathize even with the antagonist.

Overall impression.

While the Mortal Instruments Series came first, this series (The Infernal Devices) was my introduction to Shadowhunters, and I couldn’t help but fall in love with the world Ms. Clare has created.

Quotes or Highlights

“Must you go? I was rather hoping you’d stay and be a ministering angel, but if you must go, you must.”
“I’ll stay,” Will said a bit crossly, and threw himself down in the armchair Tessa had just vacated. “I can minister angelically.”
“None too convincingly. And you’re not as pretty to look at as Tessa is,” Jem said, closing his eyes as he leaned back against the pillow.
“How rude. Many who have gazed upon me have compared the experience to gazing at the radiance of the sun.”
Jem still had his eyes closed. “If they mean it gives you a headache, they aren’t wrong.”
*****

“Whatever you are physically…male or female, strong or weak, ill or healthy–all those things matter less than what your heart contains. If you have the soul of a warrior, you are a warrior. All those other things, they are the glass that contains the lamp, but you are the light inside.”

*****

“I see you’re determined to miss my point.”
“If you’re point is that there was a pretty girl in the room and it was distracting you, then I think I’ve taken your point handily.”
“You think she’s pretty?” Will was surprised; Jem rarely opinioned this sort of thing.
“Yes, and you do too.”
“I hadn’t noticed, really.”
“Yes, you have, and I’ve noticed you noticing.”

She doesn’t date hockey players, and he needs to earn the respect of his new team, but they’re willing to break all the rules for just one kiss. As long as they keep their relationship a secret everyone wins.

Since their parent’s death, Chloe Schultz has put every ounce of her energy into her twin brother, Erik’s, NHL career. She won’t let distractions—like dating—get in the way of keeping the Utah Fury as the championship team. Until she meets Reese.

Reese Murray was shocked when he was traded the week before the season started. He’s bitter, but he won’t let that stop him from proving he’s the best. The Fury welcomes Reese, with one warning, stay away from the marketing manager, Chloe Schultz, if he wants to stay on Erik’s good side. Too bad she’s the first woman that’s caught his eye in years.

Can Chloe and Reese keep their focus while trying to hide their growing attraction, or will their secret come out and tear the team apart?

First impression.

As an avid hockey fan, I was excited to get started on this series. The opening caught my interest, and while both the characters seemed a bit too easy going, I enjoyed Chloe’s interaction with the wives and girlfriends, and Reese’s interaction with his team mates.

What kept me reading (or didn’t).

I especially enjoyed seeing Reese getting to know his team mates and the action on the ice. As an avid hockey fan, I wanted a bit more intensity and roughness, but the scenes were well written and believable.

Both Chloe and Reese gave in and were willing to compromise when necessary, and I appreciated it when Chloe finally stood up to her brother. It was completely believeable that an outsider like Reese would force her to see things from a different perspective.

I will say, I HATED the way they hid their relationship – mostly because neither of them showed any back bone until it was already obvious. I really wanted Reese to fight harder from the beginning since he pointed out how much Chloe bowed to her brother already – and I was especially annoyed after she met his parents and he still agreed to keep it under wraps.

It sounds like I was annoyed more than I wasn’t, but the interaction between the two of them was great, and I enjoyed seeing them get to know each other.

After taste.

If the book was a latte, this one had a bit too much sweetener in it for me, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t a good book. I’ll probably read the rest of the series because….hockey.

Overall impression.

If you are looking for an easy, clean read with a hockey flavor, this is your book. It is well written with a few minor typos.

On one of the worst days of Autumn Whittaker’s life, she meets Deputy Dean Thompson when he pulls her over—twice—for traffic violations. Though he smells heavenly and has a killer smile, she’d be more than happy to never see him again. She soon discovers that won’t be possible: he’s her Friday night blind date.

As much as she wants to keep her distance, Autumn feels her resolve crumbling when she repeatedly bumps into Dean, discovering there’s more to him than just the upstanding law officer that she first met. He’s everything that Autumn’s controlling, manipulative former fiancé, Jason, was not, and soon, she realizes that Dean might be the key to getting over her ex and finding true love.
With everything going so perfectly, Autumn’s heart is shattered when Dean and Autumn run into Jason, and he reminds her that she’s average, ordinary, and boring. Can Dean show her that she has what it takes to make her own happily ever after?

First impression.

Truly? I was put off by Autumn. She was a little too bitter for me, but the writing was good, and I wanted to find out what happened.

What kept me reading (or didn’t).

Dean is almost painfully perfect. He never flinched at her behavior and stepped in exactly as you would expect a cop to when things got difficult for Autumn.

Because this was a short story, there wasn’t much time for the chemistry to brew between them, but the attraction was certainly there.

After taste.

Sort of like a flavored latte, this story was a bit too sweet for my personal taste, but it is well written with interesting characters.

Overall impression.

If you are looking for a quick weekend read, this is a great choice.
